Der Vorstand des Centre for the Classical Tradition (CCT) lädt für Donnerstag, den 11.12.2025 um 18:00 Uhr c.t. in Seminarraum 10 der Universität Bonn (Rabinstraße 8, Erdgeschoss) alle Interessierten herzlich zur CCT-lecture 2025 ein: In seinem Rahmen wird Frau Prof. Dr. Barbara Baert (Department of Art History, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) zum Thema ‚The Weeping Rock. Revisiting Niobe through Paragone, Pathosformel and Petrification’ sprechen.
The point of departure for this lecture is a central episode in Ovid’s Metamorphoses (6.146–312): Niobe’s transformation into a weeping stone. In this metamorphosis, form and matter converge in a way that recalls the medium of sculpture itself. Within the context of the humanist paragone debate, painting and sculpture vie for supremacy as the most virtuosic art. The lecture investigates how the figure of Niobe is mobilized within this rivalry—occupying the field of tension between the second and third dimensions, between grisaille and stone, between the figurative and the abstract.
Aby Warburg’s Tafel 5, Beraubte Mutter (Niobe, Flucht und Schrecken), documents the Nachleben of the Niobe motif, juxtaposing the bereaved mother (Niobe) with the murderous mother (Medea). This montage also gestures toward the descent to the Underworld, revealing how the constellation of motifs surrounding Niobe—hybris, lamentatio, and the chthonic substratum—opens a direct pathway into a bipolar hermeneutics of the visual medium: a “historical psychology of human expression” poised between Apollo and Dionysus.
